“But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream.”
May today call us not only to reflect on one man’s dream of a more just world but also on our own responsibility to work to see that dream more fully realized.
May we recognize and repent of our own pull toward personal security, moderation, and comfort even when those blessings come at the expense and exploitation of others. Let us not only recognize that the time is always right to do what is right, but let us resolve to actively choose and actually do those right things here and now.
We ask our Father for the vision to see and the Christ-like compassion to be concerned about the needs, challenges, and dreams of all His children- we ask for a special measure of grace to recognize and respond to the needs of the most vulnerable among us.
May we see that as those bound together in this moment and as bearers of the Divine image, we are each called to work as one for the good of all recognizing that we ultimately go up or go down together.
We cannot preach love, and live in hate.
We cannot say we long to share God’s good news, and yet peddle cheap political talking points as gospel.
We cannot profess care for the least of these as we carelessly consume at a rate that can only be supported and sustained by the exploitation of the poor.
We dare not post a performative quote one day a year without daily searching our hearts and examining our lives to see if we are living into the dream of a more just world or are simply comforting our consciences as the nightmares of poverty, prejudice, and injustice fill even the waking hours of our neighbors.
Will we choose the sacrificial path to the beloved community or will we choose our comfort and convenience as the highest good?
Only we can decide where we will stand.
May we choose wisely.
Thank you for this. May we, indeed.
